If you want to get acquainted with the former capital of Siberia - the father of all Siberian cities- do visit Tobolsk! It is the very place where science and education, theater and book-publishing, Orthodox confession and museum, exile, stone building took their origin.
Tobolsk was founded in the summer of 1587 on the river Irtysh - the ancient major rout from European Russia to Siberia. The great warrior Daniel Chulkov constructed the city.



n 1590 Tobolsk became the capital of Siberia. Tobolsk served as a threshold to the East. At those times everybody knew that Moscow was the old capital, Saint Petersburg the new one and Tobolsk was the capital of Siberia. Trading routs to China and Central Asia passed through Tobolsk.
Merchants from Great Ustyug, the land of Vyatka, Kazan and Moscow were frequent guests in Tobolsk.
In 1708, according to Peter the Great's reform Tobolsk became an official centre of the enormous Siberian province including the Ural Mountains (up to present Kirov area), Siberia and the Middle East. Large enterprises appeared in the city and its suburbs: the State factory, clerical and glass manufactories, candle factories, etc. There was also a small arms factory.
Tobolsk is a unique city-monument of stone and wooden architecture of Siberia. There are more than 300 historical and cultural monuments in Tobolsk.
Century 18 is the "Golden age" of Tobolsk, as historians put it. The city at that times acquires the highest managerial and cultural value.
In the year of 1743 the theological seminary was founded in Tobolsk . Later in 1789 the publishing house of Karnilyev was established and the first magazine "The Irtysh" which is turning into "Ipocrene" was published. In 1870 the Tobolsk museum supervised by the emperor Nicolas 2 was opened.
Names of many outstanding people are connected with Tobolsk. They are: an Encyclopedist -cartographer, architect, builder, historian, artist, writer Semen Remezov, composer A.A. Alyabyev, Decembrist G.S. Batenkov and the great chemist D.I. Mendeleev, the author of the "Humpbacked Little Horse" fairy-tale P.P. Ershov.
A lot of Decembrists were exiled to Tobolsk - the place where they are buried (S.G.Krasnokutsky, AP.Barjatinsky, V.K.Kjuhelbeker, S.M.Semyonov, A.M.Muravyov, F.B.Volf, F.M.Bashmakov).
Tobolsk is one of the leading historical cities in this country, it is the city of moral and cultural value. It is claimed to be one the major spiritual centers (among Moscow and Saint Petersburg) in Russia.
Tobolsk with its unique architecture, fine natural landscapes has become " the Siberian Mecca " for tourists from all over the world. The president of the Russian Federation visited the city on March,6, 2003. Vladimir Putin was charmed by the natural beauty of Tobolsk, its cathedrals, museums and monuments.
This visit became a fresh start for the development of Tobolsk as a spiritual, cultural and industrial centre of Siberia.
